Quincy Raceways preview for May 18

Sure, it's been frustrating with three of eight scheduled shows at Quincy Raceways having been rained out, but be thankful you are not a fan whose primary track is at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, or Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa, or Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., or Macomb Raceway in Macomb, Ill.

Here's a look at the number of nights of racing fans have seen at the following tracks:

Quincy: 5
West Burlington: 2-x
Lee County: 2
Scotland County: 0
Macomb: 0
x-only two classes were run on one of those nights

All of a sudden, 8000 Broadway looks a lot better, eh? And the good news is the weather forecast looks -- shall we say it? -- GREAT for Sunday night.

LATE MODELS AT LEE COUNTY

The late models will make one of their five appearances of the season tonight at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. This is a makeup of a rained-out date earlier this year. Tom Darbyshire is the defending track champ at Donnellson. Racing starts at 7:30.

Grab a burger, pull up chair, let's talk racin'

Ten drivers, in no particular order, I would like to share a trackburger and diet Mountain Dew with while watching a Bristol race:

Joe_bliven_4608
Joe Bliven epitomizes what
Quincy Raceways is all about.

1. JOE BLIVEN: To me, Joe epitomizes what Quincy Raceways is all about. He races for the love of the sport. It's not about traveling to all corners of the earth, it's about showing up every week at your home track and doing the best you can against the guys you call your friends.

2. JERRY WEISENBERGER:
"The Hippie," or as he prefers, "The Redneck," has never won a track title and probably never will (although every fan in the stands at 8000 Broadway, including this writer, wishes he would before his career is over). He races hard every lap, every race and every week. I appreciate that, and so do all of those fans in the stands every Sunday night.

3. DUSTIN NEESE: Simply one of the nicest guys to ever frequent the Bullring. He doesn't realize it, but there a lot of race followers who pull for him each and every week. They know he does not have a big budget or big crew, and they know there may not be a racer who gets more out of what he has than Neese.

4. MARK BURGTORF:
I have never encountered an athlete with Burgtorf's status who is as humble. He never dodges a question and always provides an intelligent, well-thought-out answer that is as educational as it is informative. Mark has proven for years that nice guys CAN finish first.

5. TONY DUNKER: OK, he may be a bit controversial, but what I admire most about him is his passion. He comes to compete each week, not simply ride around and collect a check. If he is second, he wants to be first. If he is 14th, he wants to be 13th. I admire that.

6. KEITH PRATT: He's one of the young turks at the track, but he respects the tradition and the veterans who have made the place special. He's also matured quite a bit the last few years and it shows in his on-track abilities. It's guys like Pratt who make me think the late model division will be strong for years to come.

7. MICHAEL LONG: Controversy seems to find him for the strangest reasons. In his younger days, I seem to remember a memorable feud with Ryan Meyer. Nowadays, it because he's winning too much. Whaaaat? I've said it before and I'll say it again -- let's enjoy what he is accomplishing. We may never see another streak like this for a long, long time.

8.  ROBBIE REED: He's currently recovering from kidney surgery, so first and foremost we want to see him behind the wheel again more than anything else. I'll always remember how he let me have it pretty good late in 2006 after I had written several late-season articles all but awarding another modified title to Hank DeLonjay. Lo and behold, Reed surprised us all and won that championship. I'll never forget that stretch run of Reed's -- if for no other reason, because he won't let me.

9. WYATT LANTZ:
It's great to see him running full time against at Quincy. A former track champ and, like Burgtorf, extremely humble. I had one of my most memorable post-race interviews with him a few years ago at the height of his dominance in the old "B" modified class. Wyatt tried to explain to me how he was killing everyone without coming off the least bit arrogant. That, my friends, is the mark of a true champion.

10. TERRY GALLAHER: Can you imagine the stories he has to tell? What a long and crazy ride it's been for the silver-haired hotshoe from Hannibal. I've heard some of those stories, and I would like to hear more.

(To be continued)

Former winner at Quincy grabs $40,000 payday

Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., led from flag to flag Sunday night in winning the $40,000 first prize at the second annual Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Diamond Nationals in Wheatland, Mo., at Lucas Oil Speedway.

"The Moweaqua Missile" established a fan base in Quincy over the past two years for his performances in the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) Summernationals tour stops at Quincy Raceways. Babb won the 2007 Summernationals race at 8000 Broadway and would have won in 2006 if not for a late-race run-in with a lapped car.

Babb held off Billy "Mr. Smooth" Moyer of Batesville, Ark., to win at Wheatland. Moyer entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the nation among late model drivers. Babb, in his first season of driving for the late model operation of NASCAR Sprint Cup star Clint Bowyer, survived a series of early race cautions. The final 26 laps of the 100-lap event were caution free.

Total purse for the Diamond Nationals topped $133,000.

Rounding out the top five were Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., and Steve Casebolt of Richmond, Ind. Filling out the top 10 in the 26-car field were Scott James of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Josh "Kid Rocket" Richards of Shinnston, W. Va., Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wis., and Rick Eckert of York, Pa.

RAINOUTS LEAVE REGIONAL RANKINGS UNCHANGED

The wet weather over the weekend saw shows washed out at all regional sites except Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. The end result was no change in the Stevie Dirt Regional Rankings, which are based on late model results from Quincy Raceways, 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, Lee County and Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. Lee County did not have late models scheduled.

Points are awarded on a 25-20-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 basis for feature placements.

NO MORE SOUTHERN DISCOMFORT

From our buddy at "Carmageddon" and the www.geoffreystephens.com Web site:

"I'm just praying that when he gets out of the car, he'll have something nice to say."

-- Darrell Waltrip on Kyle Busch during Fox broadcast Saturday night with four laps to go.

Thankfully, he did just that.

A usual post-race Kyle Busch interview is littered with insults, complaints and threats. After problems all night long, Kyle ended up in victory lane tonight at the Darlington first race since new paving took place.

"I can't tell you how proud of you guys I am," were the words of Kyle right before crossing the finish line.

Pit reporter Matt Yocum actually tried to pull a rude comment from Kyle in victory lane, channeling his comments from earlier in the race about the car being "pathetic," but for the most part it was all good.

• Travis Kvapil and Yates Racing continue to be the team to "do the most with the least" this season, racking up his third Top 10 finish of the season with an eighth-place run at Darlington. Kvapil improved one spot to 18th in the points, while teammate David Gilliland finished 20th in the race and dropped to 21st in the standings.

• David Ragan will get my vote for "Most Improved Driver" this year. The second-year driver finished fifth at Darlington and is now in the elusive top 12. It's hard to believe after his horrid 2006 performances at Dover and Martinsville, but he is now higher than teammates Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray in the standings.

McMurray (26th to 23rd), Jeff Gordon (13th to 10th) and Carl "They Ruined My Favorite Track" Edwards (10th to seventh) all moved up three spots in the standings. Kevin Harvick (fifth to ninth) and Casey Mears (23rd to 27th) were the big losers, both falling four spots.

• Too Tough To Tame? Not that tough anymore with the new car (says the wimpy guy behind a computer screen).

QUINCY RACEWAYS PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

Keith Pratt's late model feature victory last Sunday earns him the second weekly honor of the season. Pratt's win came in an exciting 30-lap struggle against Justin Reed, Mark Burgtorf and Terry Gallaher. Pratt's victory ended a 20-feature drought at Quincy Raceways and put him in the thick of the early season battle for the points lead. The 28-year-old Mendon driver figures to be a fixture in this summer's title hunt.

Pratt's feature victory also vaulted him to No. 3 in the Stevie Dirt Regional Rankings, which measure weekly performances at Quincy Raceways, 34 Raceway, Lee County Speedway and Scotland County Speedway.

SUNDAY NIGHT GUIDE

Race time: 6:30 p.m.

Weather forecast:
A good chance of showers in the afternoon. Hopefully, the wet weather will not be enough to curtail racing.

LATE MODELS

Points: Joey Gower 78, Justin Reed 75, Keith Pratt 73, Dustin Neese 73, Denny Woodworth 72, Jason Frankel 70.

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): Mark Burgtorf 44, Denny Woodworth 42, Robby Warner 24, Keith Pratt 18, Justin Reed 15, Joey Gower 12.

Stevie Dirt regional rankings (20 or more points): 1. Mark Burgtorf, Quincy, Ill., 95; 2. Denny Woodworth, Mendon, Ill., 86 3. Keith Pratt, Mendon, Ill., 68; 4. Justin Reed, Quincy, Ill., 54; 5. Joey Gower, Quincy, Ill., 48; 6. Tom Darbyshire, Morning Sun, Iowa, 46; 7. Jason Frankel, Quincy, Ill., 41; 8. Robby Warner, Quincy, Ill., 35; 9-tie. Jason Perry, Payson, Ill., 34; 9-tie. Lonnie Bailey, Quincy, Ill., 34; 11. Andy Nezworski, Buffalo, Iowa, 29; 12. Boone McLaughlin, Mediapolis, Iowa, 26; 13. Dustin Neese, Nebo, Ill., 23.

Money earned (points races only): Joey Gower $895, Keith Pratt 860, Robby Warner 830, Denny Woodworth 705, Justin Reed 700.

Most recent winner: Keith Pratt, May 4.

The skinny: Only four drivers have finished on the lead lap of all four Sunday night weekly show features: Denny Woodworth, Jason Perry, Bill Genenbacher, Keith Pratt ... Pratt's .252 of a second victory over Reed in last Sunday's feature was the closest finish in any series to date ... Justin Reed (45) and Jerry Weisenberger (31) have the two longest race streaks among track regulars without a feature victory in Quincy.

Pick to click: Justin Reed.

MODIFIEDS

Points: Michael Long 86, Tony Dunker 78, Steven DeLonjay 75, Davie Wietholder 73, Wyatt Lantz 72.

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): Michael Long 69, Dave Wietholder 26, Brandon Lennox 24, Vance Wilson 15, Jeff Waterman 13.

Money earned (points races only): Michael Long, $835, Wyatt Lantz 490, Tony Dunker 490, Steven DeLonjay 400, Dave Wietholder 400.

Most recent winner: Michael Long, May 4.

The skinny: Modifieds have been flagged for at least 10 cautions four straight weeks, but the only race to be shortened due to time limit was a heat race last Sunday. That's the first time I can remember that happening in the 10 years I have been covering Quincy Raceways ... Kelly Bartz saw action for the first time last week and inched closer to becoming the third modified driver in QR history to reach 5,000 career track points since the IMCA tracking method was introduced in 1998. Bartz currently sits at 4,862 ... Joe Bliven could become the seventh driver to reach 4,000 Sunday. He currently has 3,963.

Pick to click:
Michael Long. (Duh.)

IMCA STOCK CARS

Points: Abe Huls 152, Jeff Mueller 152, Chris Wibbell 150, John Oliver Jr. 143, Doug Huls 138.

Most recent winner: Jeff Mueller, May 4.

The skinny: Jeff Mueller's lap of 58.451 mph in last Sunday's feature was the slowest fast time -- yes, you read that right -- for a stock car this season. The quickest lap of 61.423 mph was turned in by Chris Wibbell on April 20 ... For those wondering, the Huls boys from Carthage -- Abe and Doug -- are cousins, not brothers ... The stock cars own the honor of running the fastest feature of the season, a 20-lapper that took only 5 minutes, 49.7 seconds on April 6.

Pick to click: Doug Huls.

HOBBY STOCKS

Points: James Leffew 82, Wes Mayfield 78, Bobby Anders 75, Aaron Brocksieck 73, Steve Carlin 73, Corrie Eifert 72.

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): Aaron Brocksieck 21, James Leffew 17, Steve Carlin 14, Bobby Anders 11, Wes Mayfield 11.

Money earned (points races only): James Leffew $250, Aaron Brocksieck 210, Wes Mayfield 180, Bobby Anders 135, Nathan Anders 130, Jeremy Buss 130, Corrie Eifert 130.

Most recent winner: James Leffew, May 4.

The skinny: Steve Watkins Jr.'s first appearance of the season at the track aproduced a fourth-place finish in last week's feature ... Hobby stocks had a season-high six cautions, but also a season high of 15 cars ... Steve Carlin remains the only series driver to reach 60 mph in a feature, turning a 60.079 mph lap on April 6.

Pick to click: Bobby Anders. He's due.

Long should not worry about the boo-birds

Michael Long finds himself in one of those interesting predicaments that often accompanies a driver who has enjoyed his kind of success.

He’s getting booed at his home track.

Not by everyone, just a handful of Quincy Raceways fans who would obviously like to see their favorite driver get to victory lane more frequently. Long has kind of cornered the market on that checkered flag thing in the modified division, winning 20 features (11 of the last 13) since the start of the 2007 season. Yeah, that’s pretty much smothering the rest of the competition.

If I were Michael, I would take the boos as the highest form of flattery and jealousy. Look what happened to Jeff Gordon in the 1990s, or even Dale Earnhardt when he first broke through into superstardom. Many of the NASCAR fans hated them because they were winning all the time. (They still seem to hate Jeff Gordon, but that's another blog for another time.)

This isn’t uncommon in racing, just unfortunate.

When someone has put together a streak like Long has, it’s something we should all celebrate and admire —  not boo, wave fists at and raise questions about certain ancestries.

But that’s racing.

One of the readers of this blog wrote in Monday night questioning why some of the fans were booing Long. The writer mentioned that Hank DeLonjay was never booed when he was seemingly winning "all the time" in the same division — and being chased, ironically, by Long.

How soon we forget, which is also part of racing. “Hank the Crank” was booed, loud and often, probably by some of Long’s fans! Mark Burgtorf has received the same treatment in the late model division.

When Long’s streak ends, and they all do at some point, there will eventually be another driver who puts together another lengthy victory run.

And he will get booed, too.

It’s one of the strange things about this crazy sport that we all love so much.

DRIVER DOMINANCE INDEX

If you remember from a couple of weeks ago, this little statistical tool measures a driver's dominance within his class. In baseball jargon, this would be his batting average.

Simply divide the number of points a driver has earned by the maximum number available. For example, Michael Long has a perfect score (1.000) because he has earned a maximum 43 points each of the two weeks since points racing began. A feature victory is worth 40 and a heat win is worth three, except in the stock cars where no points are awarded in the heats

Here's a look at the top 10 overall drivers following May 4 races:

Michael Long, modifieds, 86 for 86, 1.000
James Leffew, hobby stock, 82-86, .954
Abe Huls, stock cars, 152-160, .950
Jeff Mueller, stock cars, 152-160, .950
Chris Wibbell, stock cars, 150-160, .938
Tony Dunker, modifieds, 78-86, .907
Joey Gower, late models, 78-86, .907
Wes Mayfield, hobby stocks, 78-86, .907
John Oliver Jr., stock cars, 143-160, .894
Steven DeLonjay, modifieds, 75-86, .872
Doug Huls, stock cars, 138-160, .863

THE CARMAGEDDON CONNECTION

From our popular Carmageddon sister Web site and author Geoffrey Stephens:

-- If ever there were any doubt, Kyle Busch is now officially NASCAR's Most Hated Driver.

You can now add "Junior Nation" to the list of Busch detractors after (Saturday night's) incident at Richmond where "Shrub" was clearly at fault.

After Denny Hamlin started losing a tire following his downright domination of the race (381 of 400 laps led), Dale Earnhardt Jr. was about to break his 71-race winless streak. And then Kyle came along. In the words of Dale Jr. following the race: "I was in a position to win, ran hard and got wrecked."

-- What on earth could make Bobby Labonte agree to a contract extension with Petty Enterprises?

Money? Part-ownership? Down-home cooking?

Labonte has driven the No. 43 Dodge since 2006, garnering just three top five and 11 top 10 finishes in 81 starts.

Richard Childress openly courted Labonte and hoped to sign him for his new (fourth) full-time No. 33 Chevrolet in 2009.

Instead, Labonte opted to stick with Petty Enterprises, which has not won a race since 1999 (John Andretti).

The only fathomable explanation I can come up with is that he thinks the team is improving. Recent finishes do not suggest that, nor does his 22nd place in the point standings.

Obviously, Childress would be the better option for his career. In five Nationwide starts for Childress, Labonte has scored two top 5s. In 19 Nationwide starts for Kevin Harvick last season, Labonte picked up a win and two more top 10 finishes.

Bobby can still "do it," so it boggles the mind why he would stick around in the No. 43 (which, ironically, is losing the General Mills sponsorship to Childress).

I hope he proves me wrong because there is nothing any longtime NASCAR fans would enjoy more than a return to dominance by Petty Enterprises. Unfortunately, there is a better chance of Dale Jr. driving in the IndyCar Series than that happening

BIRKHOFER TAKES WoO WIN

Brian Birkhofer, a name familiar to many Quincy area late model fans, led flag-to-flag to win in Sunday night's 40-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Dirt Series feature at Monett Speedway in Monnett, Mo.

Birkhofer, 36, of Muscatine, Iowa, started from the pole position and was never seriously challenged en route to the $7,100 win, which came in the first-ever WoO LMS event at Monnett.

Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Ark., raced closest to Birkhofer, running in second place from lap eight to the finish. Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., finished third, followed by Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., in the fifth position.

WoO LMS points leader Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., failed to finish after cutting a right-rear tire while running fourth on lap 27, and defending WoO LMS champion Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., managed only an 11th-place finish after a slip over the turn-four berm during his heat forced him to use a provisional starting spot.

The WoO LMS will be idle this weekend and then return to action with a three-race swing through the Midwest, visiting Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park on May 16; Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway on May 17; and Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway on May 18.

Keith Pratt poised to make run at No. 1

Keith Pratt's feature victory Sunday night at Quincy Raceways positioned the 28-year-old driver from Mendon to make a run at No. 1 in the Stevie Dirt Late Model Regional Rankings.

Pratt currently sits No. 3, but the two drivers ahead of him, Mark Burgtorf of Quincy and Denny Woodworth of Mendon, will soon find their schedules taking them outside the tracks that award points in these rankings.

Top-10 finishes in all features at Quincy, Iowa tracks in West Burlington and Donnellson and Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., are where the points are available.

The two principal tracks are Quincy and 34 Raceway in West Burlington. Lee County Speedway in Donnellson and Scotland County have been running abbreviated late model schedules in recent years.

Regular weekly shows, plus Deery Brothers Summer Series events and other specials are all eligible races.

Points are awarded on a 25-20-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 basis.

YELLOW FEVER

The modifieds drew a season-high 15 cautions Sunday night, but in fairness to the class as a whole, it is a handful of drivers who are creating most of the chaos. That doesn't change the fact that more than half of the cautions over the first month of the season have been the fault of one series.

The modifieds have been flagged for 59 of the track's 99 yellows.

Here are the averages per show:

Modifieds: 11.8
Hobby stocks: 3.8
Late models: 3.0
Stock cars: 2.5

FEATURE WINNERS

Thirteen different feature winners in four classes. That's not too shabby.

CAR COUNTS

Despite the price of gasoline and other rising costs, the car counts remain healthy at Quincy Raceways. At some point this summer, if we keep moving into a recession (if we aren't there already), there could be a drop-off, but the pits look mighty healthy right now.

The two marquee classes at the track, late models and modifieds, are especially strong. There were 42 late models on hand April 30 for the Deery Brothers Summer Series event and 30 modifieds at the track Sunday night.

The averages
Late models: 24.6 cars per show, 20.3 not counting the 42-car Deery Brothers event.
Modifieds: 24.0 (season highs 33, 30)
Stock cars: 14.3
Hobby stocks: 12.3 (season high 15 Sunday night)

VICTORY FAMINE ENDS

Good buddy Dewain Hulett reports from Lee County Speedway that Dean McGee, Sr., racing out of Galesburg, Ill., won his first feature at the track in what is now a 38-year career.

McGee's victory highlighted opening night at Lee County last Friday.

Other feature winners were Jason Cook in the IMCA stock cars, Chad Sovern in the sport mods, Dean Kratzer in the hobby stocks and Rob Hammel in the wild things.

WEST BURLINGTON CANCELS

34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, canceled early Saturday because of inclement weather conditions. Must have been a lot worse in southeastern Iowa than it was around here.

NEAL DISQUALIFIED AT DAVENPORT

Terry Neal of Ely, Iowa, who finished eighth in last Wednesday's Deery Brothers feature in Quincy, was disqualified late Friday night after apparently winning the feature at the Davenport, Iowa, Speedway.

Boone McLaughlin of Mediapolis, Iowa, was the benefactor of Neal’s misfortune. McLaughlin started the race in the sixth position, ran in the top five the entire race, and took the checkers second behind Neal.

Officially finishing second was Mike Murphy Jr., who had led the early portion of the race. Third went to Andy Nezworski, with Matt Ryan fourth and Keith Pratt fifth.

FLYIN' BRYAN COLLINS ROARS AT PEVELY

Two-time and defending I-55 Raceway UMP DIRTcar late model champion Bryan Collins of Elsberry, Mo., turned back Rusty Griffaw Saturday night to win the feature in Pevely, Mo.

Collins won the 2005 NASCAR Night race in Quincy.

Collins and Griffaw had a door-to-door battle for the lead during the first half of the main event, but Collins pulled away in the closing laps to claim the victory.

BABB WINS AT MISSOURI TRACK

Shannon Babb gave his boss even more reason to smile on Saturday night.

On the same night that his famous car owner Clint Bowyer was triumphant in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition at Richmond International Raceway, Babb authored a flawless drive to victory in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series All-State Insurance 40 at Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Mo.

Babb, 34, of Moweaqua, Ill., advanced from the fourth starting spot to pass Rick Eckert of York, Pa., for the lead on lap 12 and then never looked back. Babb repelled a late-race challenge from Eckert and Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., to score his first WoO LMS win of the season.

Mere moments after hoisting an oversized novelty check commemorating his $10,000 victory in an event that was co-sanctioned by the O’Reilly MARS DIRTcar Series, Babb learned that his high-profile car owner had also scored a big Saturday-night short-track win.

"We got back here to the trailer just in time to watch Clint run the last lap and win at Richmond," said Babb, who is in his first season as the hired gun of Bowyer’s fledgling dirt Late Model team. "He’s gonna be tickled to death when he hears that we won him a late model race tonight, too."

Eckert, who started from the outside pole and led laps 1-11, settled for a runner-up finish. Moyer finished third, followed by Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Ark., and Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga.

NUTS AND BOLTS

Late model legend Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., won the "Thunder at The Gap 50" at Bulls Gap, Tenn. ... Mike Hammerle (Belle Clair), Bill Faust (Tri-City), Mark Faust (Highland) and Matt Taylor (Lincoln) also picked up notable late model feature victories.

Quincy Raceways preview for May 4

QUINCY RACEWAYS SUNDAY PREVIEW

When:
6:30 p.m.

Weather forecast: A slight chance of showers; temperatures are expected in the 50s.

LATE MODELS

Points: Joey Gower 42, Robby Warner 41, Denny Woodworth 40, Lonnie Bailey 39, Dustin Neese 39, Jason Perry 35, Ron Elbe 35.

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): Denny Woodworth 42, Mark Burgtorf 40, Robby Warner 24, Joey Gower 12.

Most recent winner: Denny Woodworth, April 30.

The skinny: Has anyone else noticed how strong Dustin "The Night Train from Nebo" Neese has been early this season? Neese is also one of the nice guys in the sport ... Think those slick, black racing surfaces don't play havoc with the cars? Just check the lap times. On the slicker surface, lap times are averaging two seconds behind those run on a muddier, stickier track ... Car counts: 15, 24, 19, 42.

Pick to click: Mark Burgtorf (I think he is supposed to be here this week).

MODIFIEDS

Points: Michael Long 43, Tony Dunker 41, Wyatt Lantz 41, Steven DeLonjay 39, Jeff Waterman, 37, Brandon Lennox 36.

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): Michael Long 58, Brandon Lennox 23, Dave Wietholder 22.

Most recent winner: Michael Long, April 30.

The skinny: Long has won three straight features. His high-water mark a year ago was six in a row, the most by an driver at Quincy Raceways in at last 10 years ... Modifieds continue to cause cautions at an alarming rate. They're averaging 11 per show, including three straight with 10 or more ... Car counts: 20, 33, 19, 19.

Pick to click:
Michael Long. (Could a bounty on the No. 18 be in the offing?)

IMCA STOCK CARS

Points: Abraham Huls 115, Jeff Mueller 112, Chris Wibbell 112, Doug Huls 110, Chris Webb 104, John Oliver Jr. 104, Steve Steinkuhler 99, Dave Wietholder 97.

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): John Oliver Jr. 17, Abraham Huls 15, Jeff Mueller 14, Chris Wibbell 12, Doug Huls 8.

Most recent winner:
John Oliver Jr., April 27

The skinny: How close is this series? The top three money winners after three weeks are TIED. Mueller, Abe Huls and Wibbell each have $625 ... We hear that Jerry Jansern, former bomber/hobby stock driver, is readying a car to run at Quincy ... Weekly car counts so far: 15, 16, 13.

Pick to click: Doug Huls.

HOBBY STOCKS

Points: James Leffew (41), Aaron Brocksieck (40), Wes Mayfield (39), Steve Carlin (38), Chad Canady (38), Bobby Anders (38).

Herald-Whig Performance Points (track regulars): Aaron Brocksieck 21, Steve Carlin 13, Bobby Anders 11, Jim Powell 11, James Leffew 7, Chad Canady 6, Wes Mayfield 4.

Most recent winner: Aaron Brocksieck, April 27

The skinny: The balance in this division has been better than expected. Anders and Brocksieck look like the premier challengers to Carlin's title reign, but thee are another three or four cars not that far off the pace ... Track officials are still hoping to coerce some drivers from Moberly to come and compete in Quincy, where the rules package is quite similar ... Car count has increased each week: 9, 11, 14.

Pick to click: Bobby Anders.

Forty-two cars participated in Wednesday
night's Deery Brothers races in Quincy.

IRONMAN’S STREAK CONTINUES

Driver Darrel DeFrance has never missed a Deery Brothers race in the 22-year history of the series. Wednesday night was his 319th consecutive event. DeFrance has qualified for all but 15 features. DeFrance lives in Marshalltown, Iowa, about seven hours from Quincy.

“There are times when I wonder if all it’s all worth it, but the next day after I have gone, I feel good about (keeping the streak alive),” DeFrance said.

DeFrance finished 12th Wednesday night.

FRANKEL STRUGGLING

Preseason Quincy Raceways championship favorite Jason Frankel continues to struggle in the early season. Frankel failed to qualify for Wednesday night’s feature after mechanical problems caused him to drop out Tuesday night at the Deery race in West Burlington, Iowa.

When Frankel returned home to Quincy late Tuesday night, he stayed up until 5 a.m. working on a broken crossmember bar to get his late model ready for the Deery show at 8000 Broadway.

Frankel was strong out of the gate this season, but he has had nothing go his way in recent weeks. It’s a long campaign, though, so don’t push the panic button concerning No. 0f. Everyone, other than possibly Mark Burgtorf, always has at least bad stretch during the season.

LUCK OF THE DRAW

Five of Quincy’s leading drivers all drew into the same qualifying heat Wednesday night. Mark Burgtorf, Denny Woodworth, Lonnie Bailey, Jason Frankel and Dustin Neese all found themselves vying for three redraw spots in the feature.

Burgtorf, Woodworth and Neese grabbed the automatic feature spots, with Frankel and Bailey relegated to one of the two consolation races. Neither finished in the top three in the consolation, which is what was needed to tag on to the end of the feature lineup.

FAST TIME

The Deery feature was run in an astounding 24 minutes, 40 seconds. That time included 50 laps and two cautions. Simply incredible.

OTHER DEERY FACTS AND FIGURES

• Woodworth became the ninth different winner in Quincy and third local driver. Burgtorf has six victories and Bailey one.

• 37 drivers have recorded top-five finishes, led by Burgtorf (13), Toland (7), Woodworth (6) and Slocum (6).

• 57 drivers have notched top-10 finishes, led by Burgtorf (15), McLaughlin (11), Bailey (11) and Woodworth (10). Twenty-two of the 57 have been Quincy Raceways regulars.

• The record car count was 48 in April 2007. Forty-two showed up Wednesday night.

Nezworski wins in West Burlington; QR drivers finish 2nd-5th

Andy Nezworski of Buffalo, Iowa, won Tuesday night's Deery Brothers Summer Series race at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa -- but that was only part of the story.

Quincy Raceways regulars garnered the next four places, with Justin Reed finishing second, Mark Burgtorf third, Denny Woodworth fourth and Lonnie Bailey fifth.

Two other Quincy drivers qualified for the 24-car feature. Joey Gower was 19th and Jason Frankel 23rd.

Nezworski picked up $2,000 for winning the race.

The tour stops at Quincy Raceways tonight at 7. No rain is in the forecast, according to WGEM meteorologist Rich Cain.
